From San Jose, there are closer places to propose. Santa Cruz is under an hour away. The coast is right there. The reason to drive a hundred and ten miles north is that the distance turns an evening into a trip, and a trip is much easier to keep a secret.
Calistoga is the quiet end of Napa Valley, with hot springs, a single main street and Maria Concetto Winery at 1367 Lincoln Avenue. Two nights there gives Saturday nothing to do but the proposal.
The route north
Without traffic, the drive is about two hours and 15 minutes. With traffic, the South Bay and the East Bay can add a great deal to that, so the single best decision is when you leave. Go Friday after the evening commute, or take the afternoon off and leave before it starts.
The usual way is Interstate 680 north through the East Bay, across the water at Benicia, over to Vallejo and onto Highway 29, which runs the full length of Napa Valley to Calistoga. Interstate 880 through Oakland to Interstate 80 takes about the same time on a clear road. Pick whichever your map shows moving on the night.
Arriving late on Friday is fine. Book a dinner reservation in town or arrive fed, check in, and do not touch the car again until Sunday.
Make the room part of it
Two nights means the room matters more. Cottage Grove Inn (1711 Lincoln Ave) has private cottages with fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. Indian Springs (1712 Lincoln Ave) and Dr. Wilkinson's Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs (1507 Lincoln Ave) put mineral pools and mud baths a few steps from the room. All three are on Lincoln Avenue, a walk from the winery.
For a resort weekend, Solage (755 Silverado Trail) and Four Seasons Resort Napa Valley (400 Silverado Trail) sit just outside downtown. They are a short ride to Lincoln Avenue, not a walk, so arrange Saturday's ride back in advance.
Saturday
Keep the morning empty. A late breakfast, a walk along Lincoln Avenue, nothing on the schedule that could run long.
In the afternoon, Maria Concetto Winery runs the proposal in a fixed order. Robinovino, the winery's pouring robot, serves the wine first. Somebody from Silicon Valley will want to watch the machine, and that is when the ring arrives. After that comes a Mediterranean table instead of a tasting flight, then a slow ride through the vineyard in a vintage-styled car, and time alone.
Book it with the winery as a proposal. At home, it is a weekend away in wine country. After a long week, that explanation needs no further detail.
