A proposal weekend · From San Francisco

Over the Bridge, Then the Question

Seventy-two miles from the city, at the quiet north end of Napa Valley, Calistoga is far enough to feel like a trip and close enough to leave on a Friday afternoon. Here is how to plan the weekend around one question.

Disclosure: Maria Concetto Winery is a DevourNow client.

A proposal planned from San Francisco usually runs into the same problem: the city is full of beautiful places, and every one of them is also full of people. Calistoga solves that by distance. It sits at the far north end of Napa Valley, past the busiest tasting rooms, with a downtown small enough to cross on foot.

That small downtown matters more than the view. Maria Concetto Winery is on Lincoln Avenue, the same street as several of the town's hotels. Park the car on Friday, walk to the winery on Saturday, walk back after the wine. Nobody has to drive once the evening begins.

Two roads north

Both start the same way: north on Highway 101 across the Golden Gate Bridge and through Marin. In normal traffic the trip is about an hour and a half. On a Friday afternoon, leaving the city can take far longer, which is the best argument for taking the afternoon off.

Through Napa Valley. Leave 101 for Highway 37, then follow 121 and Highway 29 north through Napa, Yountville and St. Helena. It is the classic wine-country approach: vineyards on both sides for the last half hour, and more traffic on weekends because of it.

Through Santa Rosa. Stay on 101 to Santa Rosa, take Mark West Springs Road east, then turn onto Petrified Forest Road over the hills into Calistoga. It is quieter and greener, with curves that ask for daylight. It also lets you stop for dinner on the way: Kalimera in downtown Santa Rosa is an easy Friday table before the last stretch.

Where to stay

On Lincoln Avenue, close to the winery. Mount View Hotel & Spa (1457 Lincoln Ave) is a block up the street from Maria Concetto at 1367 Lincoln. Dr. Wilkinson's Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs (1507 Lincoln Ave) and Indian Springs (1712 Lincoln Ave) add the town's signature: mineral pools and mud baths. Embrace Calistoga (1139 Lincoln Ave) is a small bed and breakfast that describes itself as LGBTQ+ welcoming.

For a bigger gesture. Solage (755 Silverado Trail) and Four Seasons Resort Napa Valley (400 Silverado Trail) sit just outside downtown along the Silverado Trail. Both are a short ride to Lincoln Avenue rather than a walk, so plan the ride back after the wine.

Book the room before you book the proposal. Calistoga has few rooms, and weekends in harvest season go first.

Saturday at the winery

Maria Concetto Winery has built the whole afternoon around the question, and the order is what makes it work. The wine is poured first, by Robinovino, the winery's pouring robot. While your partner is still watching the machine, the ring arrives. Then comes a Mediterranean table rather than a tasting flight: mezze, skewers, warm bread. The afternoon ends with a ride through the vineyard in a vintage-styled car, and private time after it.

To keep it a surprise, book the visit with the winery as a proposal and describe it at home as a tasting weekend. Tell the winery how you want the moment to go. Their job is the timing; yours is the ring.

Sunday, slowly

Calistoga is a hot-springs town as much as a wine town. Spend Sunday morning in a mineral pool or a mud bath, have a long breakfast, and call the people who need to hear the news first.

Head back before mid-afternoon. The return across the bridge fills up on Sunday evenings, and the weekend deserves a better ending than brake lights on 101.

Questions

How far is Calistoga from San Francisco? About 72 miles. In normal traffic the drive is roughly an hour and a half; leaving the city on a Friday afternoon can take much longer.

Do we need the car once we reach Calistoga? Not for the proposal itself. The winery is at 1367 Lincoln Avenue, and several hotels are on the same street.

How do I keep it a surprise? Book it with the winery as a proposal and present the day as a tasting weekend. The winery stages the timing, including when the ring appears.

How much does a proposal package cost? Packages and prices are set by the winery and can change. Check its proposal packages page or call 707-860-5774.

Before you leave the city

Book in this order

  • Choose the date, then book the room on or near Lincoln Avenue.
  • Call the winery to reserve the proposal and talk through the timing.
  • Take Friday afternoon off and leave before the bridge traffic.
  • Plan Saturday on foot so nobody drives after the wine.
