Sacramento is close enough to Napa Valley that it is tempting to treat a proposal like any other Saturday: drive over, taste, drive home. The problem is the last part. A proposal afternoon involves wine, and the drive home takes the better part of two hours.
Calistoga fixes that. It sits at the north end of Napa Valley with a walkable main street, and Maria Concetto Winery is on that street, at 1367 Lincoln Avenue. Book one night, park once, and the whole afternoon happens on foot.
Fast road, slow road
The fast road. Interstate 80 west past Davis and Vacaville, Highway 12 across to Napa, then Highway 29 north through the length of the valley. It is about 86 miles and roughly an hour and 45 minutes without traffic. The last stretch on 29 slows down on weekend afternoons.
The slow road. Leave Interstate 80 for Winters, then follow Highway 128 west through the hills, past Monticello Dam and the shore of Lake Berryessa, and down into the valley at Rutherford. It is slightly fewer miles but takes longer, a little over two hours, on a two-lane road with plenty of curves. Drive it in daylight, on the way in, while nobody has had a glass yet.
The slow road is the better story. It turns the trip into a drive through open hills and water before the vineyards start, and it gives the morning a reason to feel different from a normal weekend.
One night is enough
From Sacramento, a single night works: arrive by midday, propose in the afternoon, sleep in town, and drive home Sunday without rushing.
Stay on Lincoln Avenue so the winery is a walk away. Mount View Hotel & Spa (1457 Lincoln Ave) is a block from Maria Concetto. At the north end of the street, Calistoga Motor Lodge and Spa (1880 Lincoln Ave) and UpValley Inn & Hot Springs (1865 Lincoln Ave) both have geothermal pools for Sunday morning. If the night should feel more private, The Francis House (1403 Myrtle St) is an adults-only inn with five rooms, a few streets off Lincoln.
The afternoon
Maria Concetto Winery stages the proposal in a set order, so you do not have to. Wine is poured first, by Robinovino, the winery's pouring robot. The ring comes while your partner is still watching the machine. After that, a Mediterranean table rather than a tasting flight, and a ride through the vineyard in a vintage-styled car before you are left alone.
Call ahead and book it as a proposal. At home, call it a tasting weekend with a scenic drive. The road over the hills is a good enough reason on its own.
Questions
How long is the drive from Sacramento to Calistoga? About 86 miles and roughly an hour and 45 minutes without traffic on I-80, Highway 12 and Highway 29. The back road past Lake Berryessa takes about two hours or more.
Can we do it as a day trip? It is possible, but the afternoon includes wine. One night in Calistoga means nobody drives home after the proposal.
Which road is better? Highway 128 past Lake Berryessa on the way in, in daylight. Highway 12 and I-80 on the way home.
How much does a proposal package cost? Packages and prices are set by the winery and can change. Check its proposal packages page or call 707-860-5774.
