Three stalls pulled me off the vegetable route on Saturday. I tried one thing at each and liked all three. This isn't a ranking. It's a short list of where to stop at the Veterans Building market, with the prices from their own boards.

Fidel's Gourmet Growers

The banner says Fungi since 1980 and We grow what we sell, and it carries three names: Gourmet Growers, B&D and Mycopia. The price board is simple. Oyster is $8 a basket, shiitake is $8, and a mixed basket is $15. I took a basket home and liked what was in it. Three names on one banner is a good reason to ask who grew what. More on Fidel's.

At home, I'd keep mushrooms in a paper bag in the fridge and wash nothing until the pan is hot. Oyster mushrooms are delicate and cook in a few minutes. Shiitake stems are tough; save them for stock.

Revolution Bread

The board lists seven loaves: Country $8, Olive $10, French $10, Seeded Country $10, Polenta $12, T80 with scorched rye $12 and Sesame Pon $11. Out front there's a board of torn bread to taste. I tried the samples and liked them. Eat the samples before you pick a loaf. That's what they're for. More on Revolution Bread.

A country loaf keeps for days wrapped in paper, and any loaf freezes well once it's sliced.

Chad's Soup Shack

Chad's Soup Shack: a flat-top, a tray of bacon and a banner full of soup.

A flat-top with a tray of bacon on it, golden-brown bread, and a banner covered in photos of soup. I had a cup of soup and liked it. It's a good stop between the vegetables and the car. More on Chad's.

Soup is the one thing on this list you should eat on the spot. It doesn't travel well in a bag, and a farmers market isn't a bad place to stand with a hot cup.

The order I'd do it in

Mushrooms and bread go in the bag last, so nothing gets crushed. The soup goes in you first.

The vegetables, tomatoes and cucumbers have their own story: What I Carried Home.

All three are in the same lot. Go hungry, shop after.
